GGNRA Fee Increase Comment Period Ends

Proposed Fee Increases within Golden Gate National Recreation Area

Golden Gate National Recreation Area is initiating public outreach on proposed fee increases within the park. Submit comments until December 19, 2014.

The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) establishes fee collection on federal lands, and National Parks collecting fees can retain 80% of those revenues in order to support projects that improve the visitor experience.   Examples of past park projects completed with fee money include funding a portion of the Redwood Creek Restoration at Muir Beach; new interpretive signs at Muir Woods, Alcatraz, and Marin Headlands; improving trails and signs parkwide; stabilizing buildings on Alcatraz; installation of accessible vault toilets in the Marin Headlands; and completion of the Merrie Way parking lot at Lands End.  The remaining 20% of fee revenue collected at a park goes to an agency-wide fund used for projects in non-fee collection parks or for agency-wide projects such as funding the Youth Corp Programs.  The new fees collected will continue to support projects that have a direct visitor benefit.
